# Shop Pay for AI agents: why Claude Duet and other agents need it

> AI agents that buy for people pay with Shop Pay. How Shop Pay is offered to agents through a Shopify store's UCP profile, what happens without it, and how to turn it on.

When an AI agent completes a purchase for someone, it needs a way to pay that doesn't involve handling their card. On Shopify that's Shop Pay: the buyer's saved wallet, used through a token. If your store doesn't offer it to agents, they can find and cart your products but not pay for them in the conversation.

## How agents pay with Shop Pay

Stores list the payment methods agents may use in their UCP profile, under `payment_handlers`. Shop Pay appears as `dev.shopify.shop_pay`. An agent that sees it can get a Shop Pay token for the buyer, with the buyer's approval, and submit it at checkout. The agent never sees the card number.

Claude Duet pays this way: Anthropic describes it buying from online stores with Shop Pay and asking the buyer to approve each spend.

## What happens without it

The agent can still build a cart and hand the buyer a link to your checkout, but the purchase leaves the conversation. Every extra step loses buyers, and an agent comparing stores can complete the order somewhere else instead.

## How to turn it on

Turn on Shop Pay in Shopify admin under Settings → Payments. For Shopify stores, Shopify then advertises Shop Pay to agents in the store's UCP profile automatically. There's nothing to install.
