# Shopify Fall '26 Edition for AI shopping agents: what to check on your store

> What Shopify's Fall '26 Edition (Exponential) changes for AI shopping agents: Catalog, UCP, Shop Pay in agents, business details for AI, per-channel product data. And what to verify on your store.

Shopify's Fall '26 Edition, "Exponential", is mostly about agentic commerce: AI agents discovering products in Shopify's Catalog, asking stores questions, and checking out with Shop Pay. Most of it works from data your store already publishes. This is what shipped, what it asks of your product data, and how to see where your store stands.

## What the Edition announced for agents

The parts that touch how agents see and buy from a Shopify store, as Shopify lists them on its Edition page (several are marked as rolling out, so check your admin for what you have today):

- **Shopify Catalog.** Products across Shopify merchants are discoverable by agents in AI channels. Agents can show compare-at prices and markdowns without extra setup, and merchants can check their eligibility.
- **One MCP server and WebMCP tools.** A single MCP server lets an agent or app offer sign-in, product search across Catalog and checkout. Stores can also register structured tools that guide agents through search, cart and checkout.
- **UCP additions.** The Universal Commerce Protocol gets a `/buy` endpoint that creates cart and checkout permalinks, and an `/ask` endpoint that answers questions about a store from facts the business has published.
- **Business details for AI.** Merchants can review and approve the policies and FAQs that agents see.
- **Shop Pay in more agents.** Shoppers can buy through agents such as Claude Duet with Shop Pay, and merchants can sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app with checkout powered by Shopify.
- **Product data per channel.** Product data can be mapped and customized for each sales channel, and each variant can carry up to 20 barcodes.

## What doesn't change

An agent still starts from the store's profile at `/.well-known/ucp` and still works with what your catalog says: the title, the description, the options, the price, the availability and a Shopify product category. New endpoints and channels don't fill in a thin description or a missing category, and an agent can't recommend a fact that isn't written down. The [checkout guide](https://catalogaudit.app/guides/ai-agent-checkout-shopify) walks through the protocol step by step.

The Edition also doesn't tell you how any particular assistant ranks products. What it gives you is more places where your catalog is read as it is.

## What to check on your store this week

None of these needs the new features. They decide whether the new features have anything good to work with.

- **The profile.** `/.well-known/ucp` returns a profile that names the agent endpoint and lists checkout and Shop Pay. Proxies and redirects in front of the store are the usual reason it doesn't.
- **Every product has a category.** Agents filter on it. Set it in the products list in bulk.
- **Titles and descriptions say what the product is.** Agents match shopper questions against this text. See [how shoppers' questions match your catalog](https://catalogaudit.app/guides/will-ai-agents-find-your-products).
- **Policies and FAQs say what you want agents to repeat.** If you use the new business details for AI, review what agents will see before they quote it.
- **Channel mappings.** If you map product data per channel, confirm that the agent-facing channel still carries the title, description and options you reviewed.
- **A product can actually be bought.** An agent that finds it puts it in a cart. See [why carts fail](https://catalogaudit.app/guides/agent-cart-errors).

## Where your store stands

The free [AI shopping readiness checker](https://catalogaudit.app/agent-check) reads your store's profile, looks up products in its agent catalog, tries a cart and shows what an agent receives. The [full audit](https://catalogaudit.app/#audit) adds a sample of up to 25 products and asks your catalog's agent search a few shopper questions, written from your homepage products without their names, to see whether those products come back. It reports the catalog Shopify serves agents, not how a given assistant ranks products.

## The checks behind this guide

- [No catalog endpoint for AI agents](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#ucp_profile_missing): Shopify stores publish a Universal Commerce Protocol profile at /.well-known/ucp that tells AI agents where to search the catalog and check out. Without it, agents only have the store's web pages. Fix: Shopify serves the profile for every store. If a proxy, CDN or redirect sits in front of your domain, let /.well-known/ucp through to Shopify unchanged.
- [No Shopify product category](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#agent_category_missing): Agents can narrow a catalog search by category ("running shoes under $150"). A product without one can't match those searches. Fix: Set the category in Shopify admin (product → Category) from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. You can bulk-edit it from the products list.
- [Missing from the catalog AI agents shop from](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#agent_catalog_missing): Agents that shop Shopify stores over the Universal Commerce Protocol look the product up and get nothing back, so they can't recommend or sell it. Fix: Check the product's status and sales channels in Shopify admin: it has to be active and published to the channels Shopify's catalog for agents draws on. Draft, unlisted or channel-excluded products are invisible to agents.
- [Agents can't add it to a cart](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#agent_cart_failed): An agent that finds the product can't buy it: the store refuses to put it in the agent's cart, so assistants that shop for people, such as Claude Duet, move on to a store that sells it. Fix: Check the variant in Shopify admin: it has to be active, in stock or set to keep selling, and available in the market and sales channels agents buy through. Purchase options that need a selling plan or a minimum quantity also block a one-unit cart.
- [Agents can't check out in the conversation](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#ucp_no_checkout): The store's agent profile doesn't offer checkout, so agents send shoppers to the website instead of completing the purchase where they asked. Fix: Checkout through agents is a Shopify-side setting. Review the agentic commerce and sales channel settings in Shopify admin.
- [Agents can't pay with Shop Pay](https://catalogaudit.app/checks#ucp_no_shop_pay): Agents that buy for people, such as Claude Duet, pay with the shopper's saved Shop Pay wallet. The store's agent profile doesn't offer it, so those purchases can't complete in the conversation. Fix: Turn on Shop Pay in Shopify admin (Settings → Payments). Shopify then advertises it to agents automatically.

## Questions

### What was in Shopify's Fall '26 Edition for AI agents?

Shopify Catalog for agents, a single MCP server and WebMCP tools, new UCP endpoints (/buy and /ask), business details for AI that merchants can review, Shop Pay in more agents, selling in Google Search and the Gemini app, and product data mapped per sales channel. Some of it is still rolling out.

### Do I need to do anything for the Fall '26 Edition?

Nothing is required to stay listed. The useful work is making sure the data agents read is complete: a working UCP profile, a product category on every product, clear titles and descriptions, and policies you are happy for agents to quote.

### Does the Fall '26 Edition change how ChatGPT or Gemini rank my products?

Shopify doesn't say how any assistant ranks products, and neither do we. The Edition changes where agents can read your catalog and what they can do with it, not how an assistant chooses between stores.
