Missing Google Shopping product attributes in Shopify

Merchant Center's product data specification goes beyond title, price and image. Brand and unique product identifiers apply to most products, and apparel adds color, size, gender and age group. Which attributes are required depends on the product's category and the countries you sell in.

What it means

In Shopify these facts are spread across several fields: vendor, variant barcodes, variant options, the product category and its attributes, and metafields your feed app reads. An attribute goes missing from the feed when the field the app reads is empty, even if the fact appears in the title or description.

Test it free: Upload your Merchant Center CSV or TSV feed and see every missing or malformed attribute, row by row. Nothing is stored.

Example diagnosis

A feed row from a women's dress, checked by the feed validator

id,title,price,brand,gtin,color,size,gender,age_group,item_group_id
shopify_US_8123_4431,Wrap Dress - Rust / M,89.00 USD,,,,M,,,shopify_US_8123

✗ brand empty: the product's vendor is the store name's default
✗ gtin empty and identifier_exists not set
✗ color empty: "Rust" is in an option named "Shade"
✗ gender empty: required for apparel
✗ age_group empty: required for apparel

Size reached the feed because the variant has an option named Size. Color didn't: this store named its color option "Shade", so the value sits in the variant title and nowhere the feed reads as a color.

Brand comes from the vendor field, which still holds a default value. The dress has no barcode, and nothing tells Google it has none.

Gender and age group aren't stored anywhere the feed app reads, so they're empty on every row. For apparel sold in the countries Google lists, that's an item issue for Shopping ads.

Symptoms

  • Merchant Center lists items with missing value issues for attributes such as gender, age_group, color, size or brand.
  • Your feed export or the feed validator shows empty columns for attributes the product clearly has.
  • Merchant Center notes missing identifiers on branded products that have a GTIN on the packaging.
  • Product facts like color or material appear in titles and descriptions but in no field of their own.

How to fix it in Shopify

  1. See what's empty. Download your feed from your feed app or Merchant Center, or a CSV with Google's attribute names, and run it through the free feed validator. It lists missing and malformed attributes row by row.
  2. Brand: put the actual brand in each product's vendor field. Most feed apps, including Shopify's Google & YouTube app, send vendor as the brand.
  3. Identifiers: add the manufacturer's GTIN to each variant's barcode. Where there's none, send brand and MPN, or identifier_exists set to no. The invalid GTIN fix guide covers the details.
  4. Color and size: keep them as variant options with clear names (Color, Size), one value per option, rather than combined into one option or written into the title.
  5. Category and its attributes: set each product's category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. The category brings attributes such as color, size, target gender and age group that you can fill in on the product.
  6. Gender and age group: set them in the field your feed app reads. Shopify's Google & YouTube app has its own product fields for them; other feed apps document theirs.
  7. Re-sync and re-check. After the next sync, download the feed again or look at the item in Merchant Center to confirm the attribute arrived.

Caveats and when it applies

  • Requirements differ by product. Google requires gender for all Apparel & Accessories products in free listings, and for Shopping ads targeting Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom or the United States. For a lamp, gender and size don't apply.
  • Fill in only true values. A guessed age group or a placeholder brand gives Google wrong information, which is worse than an empty field.
  • Shopify's category attributes and a feed app's fields aren't automatically the same thing. Check which one your feed app reads before filling both.
  • The feed is one place these facts live. Your product page's structured data is another: publishing brand, GTIN, color and size there too keeps the two consistent for crawlers that read the page.

The audit checks behind this guide

No GTIN on any variant

Branded products without GTINs get "limited performance" in Shopping and can't be matched to the same product across sellers by agents.
