What changed
Until now, AI assistants mostly recommended products and sent shoppers to your website. Agents like Claude Duet, which Anthropic opened as a research preview in October 2026, go further: they complete the purchase in the conversation. The buyer says what they need, the agent finds it, and the buyer approves the spend.
That turns agent visibility from a marketing question into a sales one. A product an agent can't find is never suggested. A product it finds but can't put in a cart is a lost order, and the agent moves on to a store where the purchase goes through.
How an agent buys from a Shopify store
Every Shopify store publishes a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) profile at /.well-known/ucp. It tells agents where to send their requests and what the store supports. From there a purchase takes four steps:
- Find. The agent searches your catalog by what the buyer asked for, or looks products up by id. Products need to be published to the catalog agents read, with a clear title and a Shopify product category.
- Cart. The agent puts the chosen variant in a cart. The store can refuse: sold out, not sold in the buyer's market, or a purchase option the agent can't satisfy.
- Checkout. The agent turns the cart into a checkout. Only stores whose profile offers checkout to agents allow this. Otherwise the agent hands the buyer a link to your website's checkout.
- Pay. The agent pays with the buyer's saved Shop Pay wallet. Shopify offers Shop Pay to agents for stores that have it turned on.
What to check on your store
Most of what blocks an agent is product data and settings you already control in Shopify admin. Each item below is a check in the catalogaudit agent test:
- Your UCP profile exists. Open
https://yourstore.com/.well-known/ucp. A headless storefront has to pass this path through to Shopify. - Products are in the agent catalog. Draft, unlisted or channel-excluded products don't appear.
- Products come back for their own name. Vague or near-identical titles lose to other products.
- Products go into a cart. We put a few real products in an agent cart and cancel it straight away.
- Checkout and Shop Pay are offered to agents. Both are listed in the UCP profile.
Test it in a minute
The free Shopify AI shopping readiness checker runs these tests against your store the way an agent does, and shows exactly what an agent receives for one of your products. The full audit runs it on 25 products and adds everything else agents and Google Shopping read.
The checks behind this guide
No catalog endpoint for AI agents
Shopify stores publish a Universal Commerce Protocol profile at /.well-known/ucp that tells AI agents where to search the catalog and check out. Without it, agents only have the store's web pages.
How to fixShopify serves the profile for every store. If a proxy, CDN or redirect sits in front of your domain, let /.well-known/ucp through to Shopify unchanged.
Missing from the catalog AI agents shop from
Agents that shop Shopify stores over the Universal Commerce Protocol look the product up and get nothing back, so they can't recommend or sell it.
How to fixCheck the product's status and sales channels in Shopify admin: it has to be active and published to the channels Shopify's catalog for agents draws on. Draft, unlisted or channel-excluded products are invisible to agents.
Agents don't find it by its own name
Searching the store's agent catalog for the product's exact name doesn't return it in the top five, so a shopper asking an agent for it by name may be shown something else.
How to fixMake the title specific (brand, product line, product type) and distinct from similar products. Don't leave the distinguishing details only in images or variant names.
Agents can't add it to a cart
An agent that finds the product can't buy it: the store refuses to put it in the agent's cart, so assistants that shop for people, such as Claude Duet, move on to a store that sells it.
How to fixCheck the variant in Shopify admin: it has to be active, in stock or set to keep selling, and available in the market and sales channels agents buy through. Purchase options that need a selling plan or a minimum quantity also block a one-unit cart.
Agents can't check out in the conversation
The store's agent profile doesn't offer checkout, so agents send shoppers to the website instead of completing the purchase where they asked.
How to fixCheckout through agents is a Shopify-side setting. Review the agentic commerce and sales channel settings in Shopify admin.
Agents can't pay with Shop Pay
Agents that buy for people, such as Claude Duet, pay with the shopper's saved Shop Pay wallet. The store's agent profile doesn't offer it, so those purchases can't complete in the conversation.
How to fixTurn on Shop Pay in Shopify admin (Settings → Payments). Shopify then advertises it to agents automatically.
Questions
Does Claude Duet work with Shopify stores?
Yes. Duet can buy from online stores and pays with Shop Pay. On Shopify stores it goes through the store's catalog and cart for agents, which Shopify exposes through the Universal Commerce Protocol (headless storefronts don't always pass it through).
Do I need to install an app for AI agents to buy from my store?
No. Shopify provides the agent catalog and cart through the store's UCP profile, with nothing to install. What you control is whether your products are published to it, whether their data is complete, and whether checkout and Shop Pay are on.
Does Claude Duet buy without asking?
No. Anthropic says Duet asks for approval before it pays, sends, signs or deletes anything, so the buyer confirms each purchase.
